Meeting 2: At the Farm

As a next step in our goal to create an aquarium containing a cycle between fish and plants and incorporating an arduino unit to monitor and respond to environmental changes, we met with Francois, who is the Duluth Grill's hired grower extraordinaire. Below are some pictures from our time in Francois's green house, designed and constructed for Duluth Grill's Tilapia experiment.

 


One of the great science features in this three tired design is the bell syphon, which moves water from one level to the next as the water level rises. Below is a schematic of the bell syphon.

Finally, Paul took an awesome time lapse video of the syphon using a time lapse app, which I no sooner having seen what he was doing, added the app to my phone, as well.

Big idea

Bring students in on the process of farm fish tank set ups. Students would be able to manipulate variables as well as monitor the effects of changing data.
